supernatural and The Winchesters star Jensen Ackles has revealed that he was gunning for the lead role in HBO’s series adaptation of The Last of Us.
Based on the popular video game of the same name, the apocalyptic drama follows hardened survivor Joel (The Mandalorian‘s Pedro Pascal) and 14-year-old Ellie (Game Of Thrones‘Bella Ramsey) as they work together to find the cure for a deadly virus.
While the role of Joel ultimately went to Pascal, Ackles had been vying for the part.

“I was really kind of pushing hard, but I don’t think I was really in the mix or really had a shot at it,” he recently told fans at a supernatural convention, adding that the series was “high up” on his “radar” (via Just Jared).
He may not have secured that part, but The Boys actor did reveal he’s going to be filming for another game-related project, though he wasn’t prepared to give any further details.
“I am about to head up to LA to shoot a whole day for a new game that’s coming out as a character… I can’t say what it is just yet, but you’ll find out soon enough,” he teased.

Last month, Ackles revealed that he had been considered to play the lead role in Dead Pool, a role that eventually went to Ryan Reynolds.
“There was definitely a movie that I was very much in talks about. I wasn’t available, so the train just kind of stopped there,” he said.
“But, had I been available, I would’ve had to jump through the studio hoops and jump through producer hoops and stuff. But I had a really good shot, and it’s a movie that I really, really like.”
The Last of Us will premiere on HBO and HBO Max January 15, 2023.
