Is the Galaxy Z Fold 3 really waterproof? To test the water resistance of the foldable smartphone, a YouTube channel immersed the terminal in a swimming pool for 30 minutes. Once out of his bath, was the phone still in working order? Verdict below.
In mid-August, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 3, a new range of foldable smartphones convertible into tablets. Among the major innovations announced by the brand, we find the presence ofan IP certification. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is indeed IPX8 certified. For the first time, Samsung is launching a foldable smartphone guaranteed waterproof. This is also the case with the Galaxy Z Flip 3, the flip phone.
The certification guarantees that the foldable smartphone is protected against immersion in water (up to 1.5 meters for a maximum of 30 minutes). To verify Samsung’s claims, the YouTube channel of Allstate Protection Plan, an American insurance company, plunged the Galaxy Z Fold 3 into a swimming pool using a landing net.
Galaxy Z Fold 3 survived 30 minutes in pool water
The foldable smartphone remained submerged in water (at one and a half meters) for the maximum recommended period of 30 minutes. Once out of the pool, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 was still working normally. No damage was noticed on the phone. As expected, Samsung has managed to revise the central hinge so that water does not seep into the structure of the foldable smartphone.
If the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is water resistant, it does not benefit from any index of protection against solid bodies, such as dust. The presence of an X in the IPX8 rating indicates that the foldable smartphone has no not tested in the presence of dust.
According to the resistance test carried out by Jerry Rig Everything, the videographer accustomed to torturing the smartphones that come out on the market, Galaxy Z Fold 3 holds up against dust despite the lack of certification. This was not the case with previous generations. All it took was a good bit of dust in the gear of the hinge for the deployment of the main display to become very complicated.
Finally, note that Allstate Protection Plan also conducted a drop test. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 was dropped twice from a height approaching 2 meters onto a concrete surface. Despite the shock, the smartphone survived without damage.
